Adoption Placement of Children by Relatives in NJ

Often grandparents step in to adopt their grandchildren.  So do aunts, uncles and Godparents.

The adoption of children by family relatives and/or close friends of a birth parent are governed by the same procedures that apply to private placements except that certain procedural requirements for adoption steps may be waived at the discretion of the court.

In the case of a stepparent adoption the need for an investigation may be dispensed with entirely and replaced by direct evidence of facts and circumstances surrounding the adoption.
