Stimulus Payments and Medicaid-What You Need To Know

HNWElder Law, Medicaid Eligibility and Asset Protection Planning

One of the biggest questions families with a family member who has Medicaid have asked me is if they can get a stimulus check, and if they take it, will they lose their Medicaid?  For families with Medicaid, a check for up to $1200 per adult and for $500 per child can make a big difference right now. There is good news: yesterday, New Jersey said families who receive Medicaid benefits can accept the stimulus checks, and they have a whole year to spend the stimulus funds without it negatively impacting their Medicaid.  Essentially, New Jersey is going to treat that money like a tax refund, and let families who receive it spend it over up to 12 months.  If you have a family member with a disability who received a stimulus check, and you are looking for guidance on what to do with it to preserve access to other government benefit programs like SSI and DDD, contact Fredrick P. Niemann, Esq. toll-free at (855) 376-5291 or email him at fniemann@hnlawfirm.com.
